February 2018 Newsletter

The door for Bocce Ball is swinging closed in April at our annual spring meeting, and the schedule of teams will be formalized. We will be ready for a new year of fun in the sun with your neighbors and I hope you have your team registered and signed up. For those that just want to be an alternate for the coming year, the same goes for you. Get your name, email and telephone number on our alternate list so teams can call you with a scheduled time. It's always nice to know when you are playing rather than sitting on a bench at 9:30 and waiting to see who needs a player. We always need alternates. We still have a few veteran teams that have sat on the sidelines and are waiting for the April meeting to join us once again. If you are playing this year, please contact Gerry Bernar at 815-331-2448 and confirm names, team name, phone numbers and email. If you send in a check it must be made payable to LS Bocce. Thank You Gerry!

For those that don't know what Bocce Ball is, let me explain. It is an Italian game of bowling. It was originally a grass game, but here at Lake Summerset, we have custom courts and rules. You have nine balls, four for each team and a smaller ball called the pallino. You flip a coin to see who goes first, and they throw the pallino down the court past the mid way mark. From that point on it's who ever is the closest to the pallino waits for the other team to beat their toss. At this time your opponents may offer words of encouragement to you like, “That was a sissy throw.” or “Can't you do better than that.” Some just growl when you get closer than them. All comments are part of the fun of the game. We all laugh at each other as the Bocce Balls, when thrown, have a mind of their own. A fun Thursday for the entire summer of 21 weeks. If you're a novice at the game it doesn't matter. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to play this game. Just toss a ball and enjoy the competition with your neighbors. The hardest part of this game is coming up with a name for your team. Get your act together. It only cost $10 to join and $1 for every time you play. That gets you two banquets, one at mid season and one after the play-offs in September. You play at a scheduled time every Thursday, weather permiting, starting at 9:30 a.m. So you have the rest of the day to enjoy the other amenities of Lake Summerset. Join in for a summer of fun with your neighbors.
